I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some truly incredible places, and 2024 was no exception! In August, we had the chance to visit family in Bern, Switzerland, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. So grab a snack and settle in—this is going to be a long post!
Before getting started huge thank you to my husbands aunt and uncle for always being incredible hosts and planning such an amazing experience.
On our first day, we took a short walk from the house to a stunning bridge. The water below was the most vibrant blue I’ve ever seen—absolutely breathtaking. A lot of the water in Switzerland comes from glaciers, giving it that striking, almost otherworldly hue. We learned that during warmer months, when the water’s current isn’t too fast, locals often leap off the bridge and float downstream. Sadly, the current was too strong the day we visited, but I can only imagine how incredible it must be to experience firsthand!
The following day we traveled to Trummelbach Falls. A series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside a mountain made accessible by the tunnel lift and stairs. Once again just blowing our minds with how brilliant nature is.
The next few days were spent in the charming, picture-perfect village of Gimmelwald. Nestled in the Bernese Oberland of the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, Gimmelwald is a peaceful, traffic-free village situated between Stechelberg and Mürren. We left our car behind and took the gondola up to the village, where we were greeted by breathtaking views. Paragliders could be seen soaring gracefully above the stunning alpine landscape—it was such a surreal sight to witness! I miss hearing the clinking sounds of bells from the farm animals.
One of the days, we took a gondola from Gimmelwald up to Mürren, then hopped on the Allmendhubel funicular, which whisked us even higher to the mountaintop, where we began our hike with jaw-dropping mountain views. The panorama from the top, overlooking Mürren and the entire Lauterbrunnen Valley, was absolutely breathtaking. The scenery was beyond words—just pure natural beauty at its finest.
The hike was about 3 or 4 miles long and we took our time just taking in the scenery, stopping for snack breaks along the way. The next day we explored the town of Murren a bit longer, flowers and edelweiss in so many places, it was truly the cutest little mountain town.
We said our goodbyes to the mountain villages and returned down the mountain to our vehicle. Next we traveled to a super cozy air bnb in Interlaken next to the Brienz lake, another strikingly beautiful blue lake! We explored the town and took a boat around the lake to get some sight seeing in! The sights and views never got old.
Our next destination we decided to hop on a train and head south to Ascona. An Italian influenced area in the south of Switzerland, I was super excited to visit and eat all the gelato we could find haha. We took it easy walking, enjoying the sights and swimming in the lovely lake Maggiore.c
Last but not least, we traveled back home to Bern and explored their bustling downtown. I say bustling but even with it being a big city everything still felt calm and relaxed. We popped into stores, had lunch and even visited Albert Einsteins house.
For one last adventure we went to the town of Gstaad for their Gstaad Züglete festival!
Cowbells tinkling high and low, dairy cows festooned with flowers, It’s the time when local farmers bring their herds of cows back down to the valley and lead them through the village in a colorful procession. It was quite a site and so exciting to not know which direction from the mountain they would be coming.
I feel as though I have been saying this since coming back from our trip, but if I could I would move there. Switzerland will forever be one of our greatest trips!
If you made it this far, thanks for all your support! I hope I can inspire others to get out and travel more!
